Alcohol Facts & Risks

This page provides clear, research‑informed information about how alcohol affects the body, decision‑making, and overall well‑being. Understanding these facts helps individuals make safer, more informed choices.

What Is Alcohol?

Alcohol (ethanol) is a depressant that slows the central nervous system. It affects reaction time, coordination, judgment, and the ability to make safe decisions. Even small amounts can influence thinking and behavior.

How Alcohol Affects the Body

Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC)

Short‑Term Risks

Long‑Term Risks

Alcohol & Youth

Teens and young adults face unique risks because their brains are still developing. Alcohol can interfere with memory, learning, emotional regulation, and impulse control. Youth who drink are more likely to engage in risky behaviors, including unsafe driving and unplanned situations.

Alcohol and Driving

Alcohol significantly reduces the ability to operate a vehicle safely. Even small amounts can slow reaction time, reduce coordination, and impair depth perception. Driving under the influence is illegal and can lead to fines, license suspension, probation, or jail time.

Social & Legal Consequences

Alcohol‑related violations can affect school standing, employment opportunities, court records, insurance rates, and family trust. Completing an Alcohol Awareness / MIP class is often required to address these consequences and help individuals make safer choices.
